Barcelona SpainMap of Barcelona Center in pdf The Sagrada FamíliaLa Sagrada Família (Catalan, 'The Holy Family') is a large Roman Catholic basilica under construction in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Its formal title is Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família. Antoni Gaudí worked on the project for over 40 years, devoting the last 15 years of his life entirely to this endeavour. On the subject of the extremely long construction period, Gaudí is said to have joked, "My client is not in a hurry." After Gaudí's death in 1926, work continued under the direction of Domènech Sugranyes until interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1935. Parts of the unfinished building and Gaudí's models and workshop were destroyed during the war by Catalan anarchists. The design, as now being constructed, is based both on reconstructed versions of the lost plans and on modern adaptations. Since 1940 the architects Francesc Quintana, Isidre Puig Boada, Lluís Bonet i Gari and Francesc Cardoner have carried on the work. The current director and son of Lluís Bonet, Jordi Bonet i Armengol, has been introducing computers into the design and construction process since the 1980s. Sculptures by J. Busquets, Etsuro Sotoo and the controversial Josep Subirachs decorate the fantastical façades. According to the newspaper El Periódico de Catalunya, 2.26 million people visited the partially built basilica in 2004, making it one of the most popular attractions in Spain, alongside the Museo del Prado and Alhambra. The central nave vaulting was completed in 2000 and the main tasks since then have been the construction of the transept vaults and apse. Current work ( 2006 ) concentrates on the crossing and supporting structure for the main tower of Jesus Christ as well as the southern enclosure of the central nave which will become the Glory façade. From Wikipedia Park GüellPark Güell is a 17,18 ha wide garden complex with architectural elements situated on the hill of el Carmel in the Gràcia district of Barcelona, Spain . It was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and built in the years 1900 to 1914. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí". The park was originally part of a commercially unsuccessful housing site, the idea of Count Eusebi de Güell, whom the park was named after. It was inspired by the English garden city movement, hence the original English name Park. The site was a rocky hill with little vegetation and few trees, called Muntanya Pelada (Bare Mountain). It already included a large country house called Larrard House or Muntaner de Dalt House, and was next to a neighbourhood of upper class houses called La Salud. The intention was to exploit the fresh air (well away from smoky factories) and beautiful views from the site, with sixty triangular lots being provided for luxury houses. Count Eusebi Güell added to the prestige of the development by moving in 1906 to live in Larrard House. In the event only two houses were built, neither designed by Gaudi. One was intended to be a show house, but on being completed in 1904 was put up for sale, and as no buyers came forward Gaudi, at Güell's suggestion, bought it with his savings and moved in with his family and his father in 1906. It has since been converted into a municipal garden. It can be reached by underground railway (although the stations are at a distance from the Park), by city buses, or by commercial tourist buses. While entrance to the Park is free, Gaudí's house, "la Torre Rosa," — containing furniture that he designed — can be only visited for an entrance fee. Camp NouThe Camp Nou ( Catalan for "new field", often reversed in English to become Nou Camp ) is a football stadium in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It has a capacity of 98,918. The stadium is the home ground of FC Barcelona. It has the tenth largest capacity in the world, and the largest capacity in Europe. Its official name — Estadi del Futbol Club Barcelona — translates as FC Barcelona Stadium, although it is popularly called the Camp Nou or the Nou Camp, by football fans. The stadium, built between 1954 and 1957 , was designed by architects Francesc Mitjans-Miró, Lorenzo García Barbon and Josep Soteras Mauri. FC Barcelona won their first game at Camp Nou in impressive fashion, a 4-2 victory with Eulogio Martínez scoring the first goal at the new stadium. Over 90,000 fans were present at this momentous occasion. The stadium consists of facilities such as a memorabilia shop, mini pitches for training matches, and a quaint little chapel for players to seek divine assistance before matches. At the stadium stands the most visited museum at Catalonia: El Museu del Barça receives about 1.200.000 visits per year. The museum was inaugurated in 1984 under the presidence of Josep Lluís Nuñez. The museum shows 1.420 pieces about FC Barcelona 's history, of which 420 are trophies of all the FC Barcelona sections.
